How to clean scratched CDs and DVDs so they play perfectly

But don't throw it in the trash just yet! Because the data on a CD or DVD is actually stored closer to the top label, the bottom plastic layer is just a protective shield. Light surface scratches on this plastic can often be buffed out.

The Golden Rule of Disc Cleaning

The laser reads data in a spiral. If you accidentally scratch the disc while wiping in a circle, you might destroy a continuous stream of data. A straight-line scratch across the data track is easily corrected by the disc player's error-correction algorithms.

Method 1: The Toothpaste Trick

Standard white toothpaste (not the gel kind) is a very mild abrasive. It's gritty enough to polish away the jagged edges of a scratch, allowing the laser to read through the plastic clearly again.

1. Wash the disc gently with warm water and mild dish soap to remove dirt and oils.
2. Apply a small dab of white toothpaste to the scratched area.
3. Using a soft microfiber cloth, gently rub the toothpaste in straight lines from the center out.
4. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and let it air dry.

Method 2: Isopropyl Alcohol

If the disc isn't scratched but rather covered in sticky fingerprints or grime, a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution works wonders. Dab a microfiber cloth in the alcohol and gently wipe outward from the center. The alcohol evaporates quickly without leaving residue.
