How to safely pack and ship 100+ DVDs
Packing a single DVD to mail to a friend is easy. Packing a collection of 150 DVDs into a single box to ship across the country to a buyback facility is an engineering challenge. A box of 150 DVDs weighs over 40 pounds. If dropped by a courier, the kinetic energy will shatter dozens of cases if they aren't packed correctly.
The "Brick" Method
The goal is to turn the contents of your box into a single, solid mass. If individual cases can move, they will break.
- Line the Bottom: Place a layer of bubble wrap or crumpled kraft paper at the absolute bottom of the box to act as a shock absorber.
- Spine Up, Tight Rows: Place the DVDs vertically (like books on a shelf) tightly next to each other. Create rows. When one row is full, slide a piece of cardboard against it, and start the next row.
- The Shake Test: Before sealing the box, close the flaps and shake it vigorously. If you hear a "clack-clack-clack" sound of plastic hitting plastic, you have failed. Open it up and add more packing paper until it is completely silent when shaken.
The Tape Job
A heavy box will burst open at the bottom seams. Use the "H-Taping" method: tape the center seam, and then tape both of the edge seams to form a capital "H". Use heavy-duty packing tape, never masking or duct tape.
